Kublai Khan sent a fleet at Japan in 1274 and a far larger one in 1281, and both times a typhoon came in and destroyed it before the landing could hold. The Japanese called the storms kamikaze, divine wind, and built centuries of national self-understanding on the idea that the weather itself had taken a side.
Marine archaeologists have since found the wrecks. Many of the hulls were rushed river boats, poorly built for open water. The wind was real. So was the shortcut.
