Both are corundum. The only difference is which trace element got in. Chromium turns it red and we call it ruby. Iron or titanium turns it anything else and we call it sapphire. Identical structure, identical hardness, two entirely different price brackets.
The name was assigned by color. Nothing underneath it changed.
