The QR code was designed for car parts, and inspired by a board game.
Masahiro Hara built it at Denso Wave in 1994 because barcodes could not hold enough data to track components down a Toyota line. The layout came from staring at a Go board and thinking about black and white stones on a grid. Denso patented it and then chose never to enforce the patent, which is the entire reason it ended up on every menu, poster and window on earth.
