The US Navy issued it as a base layer in 1913 and nobody was supposed to see it. Then men worked in heat, stripped down to it, and came home from the war still wearing it. Brando put one on screen in 1951, Dean in 1955, and a piece of standard-issue military undergarment became the most worn object on earth.
