Black was the hardest color to make and the most expensive to own.
Medieval dyers could not get there in one bath. They built it up in layers, woad first, then madder, then oak gall over the top, and even then most of it faded toward rust or bruise-purple within a season. A garment that stayed truly black was a statement about what you could afford to replace.
