Pink was a boy's color.
In 1918 the trade journal Earnshaw's Infants' Department told American retailers plainly: pink is the stronger, more decided color, therefore suited to boys, while blue is daintier and prettier and belongs on girls. That held for decades. It flipped around the middle of the century, driven by manufacturers rather than anything else, and within a generation everyone was certain it had always been the other way.
An entire rule everyone knows, invented by a catalogue, reversed by a catalogue.
