Louis Reard unveiled the design in Paris in July 1946, four days after the United States detonated a nuclear device at Bikini Atoll and moved the islanders off their home. He borrowed the name on purpose, betting the reaction would be comparable. No model in Paris would wear it, so he hired a dancer from the Casino de Paris instead.
