A Faraday cage works by conducting, not by blocking.
Charge redistributes across the surface and cancels the field inside, which is why you are safe in a car during lightning and why your microwave has a mesh in the door. But the cage only holds if it is closed. Leave a gap wider than the wavelength and the whole thing becomes an antenna instead.
