Napoleon III kept a set of aluminium cutlery for his most important guests and let everyone else eat off gold. When the Washington Monument was capped in 1884 they used a small aluminium pyramid, because at the time it was the most valuable metal on earth. Two years later the Hall-Heroult process arrived and the price fell through the floor.
Now it is disposable. Same metal. The value was never in the substance.
