The first geisha were men, entertainers working the pleasure districts in the early 1700s, and women only took over the profession decades later. Even the white oshiroi makeup was an engineering decision. It was formulated to read correctly by candlelight, in rooms lit by open flame, where ordinary skin tone disappeared entirely.
