Agathocles of Syracuse did it in 310 BC, landing in Carthage and torching the fleet in front of his own army. Tariq ibn Ziyad is said to have done it at Gibraltar in 711. Cortes in 1519 did not actually burn his ships. He scuttled them and ran them aground, and the story got improved in the retelling because burning is better.
The tale gets reassigned to a new commander every few centuries. People need it to be true more than they need it to be accurate.
