Simons and Chabris ran the experiment in 1999. Watch a short video, count how many times the players in white pass the basketball. Partway through, a person in a full gorilla suit walks into the middle of the frame, faces the camera, beats their chest, and strolls out. It takes nine seconds. Roughly half of all viewers, asked afterward, report seeing nothing unusual.
They were not distracted. Their eyes were open and pointed at it. Attention decided it was not there.
