Khaki is an Urdu word. It means dust.
British officers in 1840s India stopped dyeing their uniforms red and started staining them with tea, curry powder and river mud, because red is an excellent color for being seen and a terrible one for staying alive. It was the first time an army dressed to disappear.
Every camouflage pattern since is a footnote to soldiers ruining their own uniforms on purpose.
