The Eye of Providence: Where It Came From and How It Got Hijacked
Share
An eye inside a triangle, often radiating light. Ask most people what it means and you will hear Illuminati. The actual history runs the other way, and it is more interesting.
It started as Christian art
The eye enclosed in a triangle appears in European religious painting from the Renaissance onward, where the triangle denotes the Trinity and the eye denotes the omniscience of God. Pontormo painted it in the 1520s. It sits above altars across Catholic and later Protestant Europe throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, entirely unremarkable and entirely orthodox.
The American seal
The Great Seal of the United States was designed across three committees between 1776 and 1782. The eye entered via Pierre Eugene du Simitiere, a consultant on the first committee, who was drawing on the standard religious iconography of his day. The final design by Charles Thomson pairs it with Annuit Coeptis, roughly "he has favoured our undertakings."
Not one of the men involved was a Freemason at the time of the eye's inclusion, and the surviving committee papers make no reference to Masonic symbolism. The eye reached American currency in 1935, on the reverse of the one dollar bill.
The Masonic adoption
Freemasonry did adopt the all-seeing eye, but later. It appears in Masonic usage from roughly 1797, well after the American seal was designed. Masonry borrowed a widely available Christian symbol, as it borrowed a great deal else.
The Illuminati connection
The Bavarian Illuminati existed. It was founded by Adam Weishaupt in 1776, suppressed by the Bavarian government by 1787, and never used the eye in a triangle as its emblem. Its actual symbol was an owl. The association between the Illuminati and the eye is a twentieth-century invention, assembled long after the organisation had ceased to exist.
Why this pattern repeats
A symbol's meaning is not fixed in the symbol. It is assigned by whoever is looking, and reassigned every few generations. The eye has been the Trinity, providence, national aspiration, fraternal watchfulness and shadow government, in that order, without changing shape once.
That is the genuinely unsettling observation, and it does not require a conspiracy to be true.
